No Layoffs in Parks: The New Local 199 Wins Again!
Local 199 has fought hard to keep Miami-Dade park attendants on the job, and yesterday we confirmed that no one in parks will be getting a pink slip. In fact, many employees will actually get a step increase!
Out of 129 park attendants, 92 new positions will fall within one of four new classifications, Landscape Attendant, Landscape Technician, Facility Maintenance Attendant, and Natural Areas attendant.
Employees who applied for these positions and who are hired within the new classifications will receive a step increase. 18 park attendants will be reclassified as Beach Maintenance and maintain the same level of current benefits and pay. 19 park attendant positions will be absorbed into other positions throughout parks.
“We’ve been organizing and increasing our membership in Parks and as a result we have saved people’s jobs,” said Thomas Paige of Zoo Miami. “But if more parks employees don’t join their union, we could very well be back in this same position in the near future."
The win in parks comes just days after Local 199 confirmed that as a result of our contract ratification, non-sworn Miami-Dade police officers will also keep their jobs. These back-to-back victories are a clear indication it is new era at Local 199.
